As someone who’s been through pregnancy with T1D myself, I know how easy it is to feel like you’re stuck on a medical conveyor belt — scan, appointment, blood sugar log, repeat. And then comes the subtle (or not-so-subtle) comments that your birth will probably be complicated, probably early, probably medicalised… and definitely not in your control.
But what if I told you that’s not the full story?
What if I told you that yes — you can absolutely have a positive, calm, and even empowering birth, even with type 1?

Reclaim Your Birth Narrative
First things first: it’s okay to want more than “just a healthy baby.”
You are allowed to care about your experience too.
You’re allowed to want to feel safe, supported, and respected.
You’re allowed to dream of a birth where you feel powerful — not just monitored.
Pregnancy with T1D can be full-on, yes, but it doesn’t mean you’re broken or that your body can’t do this beautifully. When we shift the lens from “high risk” to “high awareness,” everything changes. Knowledge becomes power. And from there, you can start making aligned choices that feel good.
You Do Have Options — Even with T1D
One of the biggest myths I hear is that if you have type 1 diabetes, you have to be induced early, or you can’t have a water birth, or you must be on continuous monitoring the entire time.
Here’s the truth:
Guidelines are not rules.
And your body is not a ticking time bomb.
You can absolutely ask questions, explore your choices, and create a birth plan that fits you. That might include an induction — or not. It might include an epidural — or not. What matters is that you are making those choices, not fear or pressure.
