And why it’s not just about the numbers

Let’s be real for a second.

When you’re pregnant with Type 1 diabetes, it can feel like every single day is being measured by your blood sugars.

You wake up wondering if you spiked overnight.

You go to bed hoping you won’t crash at 3am.

You go to your appointments already bracing for what your time-in-range percentage will be.

But here’s something I really want you to hear:

A “good day” is not just about the numbers.

Not even close.

For me—and for the amazing mums I work with—a good day can mean so many different things. Sometimes it looks like having a few solid hours in range and feeling proud of that.

Sometimes it means remembering to pack a juice box in your bag for once.

Or actually pressing play on that 10-minute relaxation track that’s been sitting in your inbox forever.

Sometimes it’s having a little chat with your baby after a difficult scan, reminding yourself that you’re still doing this.

Still growing them.

Still showing up.

And sometimes, it’s just letting yourself off the hook for the cereal that spiked you or the nap you didn’t take.

Because the truth is, you’re doing something huge.

You are growing an entire human being inside a body that already works incredibly hard to keep you alive.

Your data might be part of the picture—but it’s not the whole story.

Do the numbers matter?

Of course they do.

But chasing perfect can wear you down.

Especially when your insulin needs are changing constantly and your hormones seem to have their own secret plan.

So instead of obsessing over graphs and targets, I invite you to shift the goalposts a little.

A good day might be:

Here’s something I like to offer as a gentler way to check in.

No judgement, just reflection.

You could print it, screenshot it, scribble it on a sticky note—whatever works for you.

Today I…

– Paused and checked in with myself

– Spoke kindly to my body

– Caught one number early instead of spiralling

– Connected with my baby, even for a moment

– Let go of something I usually feel guilty about

If you only ticked one of these today, that’s still a win.

If you didn’t tick any, there’s always tomorrow.

This isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real, and being kind to yourself while doing one of the hardest things: managing diabetes and pregnancy at the same time.

If today felt hard, know that I see you.

If today felt ok-ish, or “good enough,” I hope you’ll celebrate that too.

And if you’re craving more calm, more confidence, or just someone who gets it—I’m right here.
